On March 25th, 2011 Governor Gary Herbert passed the Utah Legal Tender Act. The bill provides a sound alternative to federally issued paper currency and lawmakers in state of Utah believe the bill will help prevent inflation incurred by the dollar caused by excessive printing of the notes by the Federal Reserve. The Utah Legal Tender Act "recognizes gold and silver coins that are issued by the federal government as legal tender in the state and exempts the exchange of the coins from certain types of state tax liability." The new law legalizes currency competition in Utah by removing state taxes on individuals and businesses trading in precious metal coins
