SXSW 2013: Makerbot Shows Off New 3-D Scanner That Turns Real Objects Into 3-D-Printable Files
• popsci.comRight at the start of South by Southwest, MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis has announced the company's 3-D printing desktop scanner: the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner. It's exactly what it sounds like: a Makerbot-created tool that can scan real, 3-D objects and turn them into digital files. Those files can then be sent to other 3-D printers, and the objects printed on demand.
Lasers and cameras in the device scan the object and digitize it. After that, with the file handy, it can be shared--ideally meaning hobbyists without much experience in scanning will be able to create and share files with other hobbyists without much experience in scanning.

But be careful. Might wreck your printer.
Anybody figured out how to print ammo, yet? Please let us in on the secret. Since most of the printing of actual "stuff" has to do with printing plastic, maybe printing ammo has to do with printing plastique (plastic explosives).
We ought to stop reporting these stories about 3-D advancements or piss-ant demi-gods like Schumer, Cuomo, Bloomberg, and Feinstine are going to go into cardiac arrest with horrid visions of every 'Joe the common man' one day soon sitting in his livingroom printing out his own machinegun. Armed citizens and Socialism just don't go well together.
