These same textbooks define Native Americans in terms of a few chiefs, a lot of broken treaties and the Trail of Tears. After the Trail of Tears, the authors of history books assumed Southeastern Native Americans to be extinct. Of course, there are very, very few statues of Native Americans in the Southeast, so we don't have to worry about them being torn down. Nevertheless, we are stuck with the myths that
