Oculus and Sony Throw Down With Competing VR Headsets at GDC

• http://www.wired.com, By Chris Kohler
Virtual reality is top of mind at this year’s Game Developers Conference, taking place March 17-21 in San Francisco. On Tuesday evening, Sony assembled developers and press into a small conference room at the Moscone Center to unveil Project Morpheus, a VR headset designed for the PlayStation 4. And this morning, Oculus announced a brand new development kit for its own VR headset, the Rift, featuring a slew of significant upgrades that make the VR experience much closer to the promise of stepping into another world and forgetting it’s just a simulation.

WIRED got an advance look at the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 on Tuesday morning. First, we tried on the Oculus development kit that game developers have had access to since the startup Kickstarted its headset back in late 2012. It still looked good, better than any other virtual reality experience we’d ever tried prior to its introduction, but its problems are well known by now: Turn your head too quickly, and the image before you turns into a smeary mess. Tilt your head or turn your body, and the Rift couldn’t detect the movement.
