A team of international scientists discovered 60 new species including six frogs and 11 fish. A three week expedition took the scientists to the southeastern border of Suriname near Brazil, Trond Larsen with the nonprofit research and advocacy organization Conservation International told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

The team cataloged species and studied the freshwater environment in the region. The region, termed the Palumeu River watershed, is largely unexplored rainforest. Conservation International does frequent work there. For this expedition, 30 local men were recruited to help the team navigate the rivers and dense forests.
