Mexico Urges Holiday Travelers To Form Convoys "For Their Own Safety"

• Slate.com

Air travelers may think they have a lot to worry about this Thanksgiving, what with the strict TSA screenings. But the Associated Press reports that people driving to Mexico are less worried about pat-downs than shootouts. The government of Mexico is encouraging migrants traveling from the United States for the holidays to "form convoys for their own safety." The AP says "a seemingly intractable wave of drug cartel violence has made some border highways, especially in the states of Tamaulipas, Sonora and Sinaloa, so dangerous that the U.S. State Department urges travelers to avoid driving on some of the roads," and the Mexican government has promised to have police officers escort convoys of road-trippers along the most dangerous sections of roads. Migrants, who often travel with cash and gifts for family members in Mexico, once didn't have to worry about anything more sinister than shakedowns from the occasional crooked cop. But according to the AP, "that seems almost innocuous compared to the challenges posed by drug cartel gunmen, who frequently set up roadblocks on northern highways to steal vehicles and cash, kidnap or kill travelers."
