investigated for giving citizenship to mainly Pakistani foreigners,
nearly a year after Britain warned that corrupt officials were handing
out false South African passports.

Nothing new about this. South African citizenship credentials have been available for sale since the change of government in 1994. The cost then was about 10,000 Rand, and included a new name as well.
It's a shame, actually, that this avenue of starting one's life over is now going away.
