In this day and age where a person can be sent (and in fact has gone) to federal prison for five to ten years for felony possession of a unlicensed automatic weapon for having their (possibly dirty or malfunctioning) semi-automatic double off on a trigger pull, fine tuning a weapon can be hazardous ... and not from the weapon.

I don't know how many guns have been ruined by people with that attitude.

You can reduce the trigger pull on most firearms by simply reducing  the spring tension. This guy does it okay with the trigger spring -- bending it a little -- I wonder why it didn't occur to him to do the same thing with the hammer spring.

Cutting off one "leg" of the spring -- as he did -- will make the hammer tend to cock when it moves, because of the unequal tension. This will cause uneven wear on the hammer pin and eventually lead to its malfunctioning.

As to using a dremel tool to smooth the sear surface . . . DON"T DO IT!  If you don't have the proper stones, you can use a piece of 400 wet-or-dry sand paper laid onto a smooth surface, (a piece of glass works if you don't have access to a granite surface plate) and wet the sand paper with WD-40. The WD-40 acts as a honing oil. Draw the sear surface very carefully across the sand paper until the cross grind scratches are gone, then finish up with 600 wet-or-dry paper.  This won't lighten the trigger pull much, but it makes much smoother.

I learned to do this sort of thing back before the internet made tracking down the information and tools so easy. Now, anybody can be depot-level armorer for their volunteer domestic security force. I love technology!!

Please, please, please read this post if you are a gun person or are interested in guns.

Please, please, please read this post if you are curious about guns at all, but honestly don't know a whole lot.

I know there are a lot of damned smart people here, so don't take this thread as an insult to your intelligence if you already know all of this stuff. Smart people can get tricked into talking too much about things they know a lot about or are interested in, just as easily as your average dope.

We all already know that the Bill of Rights has been usurped. It's really important to understand this in detail if you are interested in firearms. The First and Second Amendments together are at issue here. But I'm not posting this to express outrage at the violation of the week. I'm talking about some handy guidelines to keep yourself safe in general.

There are certain things that you just cannot discuss in regards to firearms anymore, even out of simple, innocent curiosity, without putting yourself at risk of retribution from the state. Please do not underestimate the magnitude of what I'm saying here or dismiss it as paranoia.

Things that you should never discuss with anyone, ever:

1. Converting or modifying any sort of legal firearm to function in any way other other than the manufacturer's specification.
2. Availability of devices that modify the appearance or function of a firearm in such a way that violates the parameters of Title 18 U.S.C. § 922(r) (Reference at bottom, wordy, legal-ease, and horrible, but you really ought to know)
2. Availability of devices that modify the original design functions of a firearm.
3. Personal sales of any firearms over state lines without using an FFL dealer as an intermediary.
4. Purchasing a firearm for the express purpose of reselling to another person within a single state without an appropriate, legal transfer of ownership as required by the state you live in. (A straw purchase)
5. Selling a legally purchased firearm to another person within a single state without an appropriate, legal transfer of ownership as required by the state you live in.
6. Buying or selling a firearm across international borders.
7. Buying or selling a firearm that violates the National Firearms Act of 1934, the Gun Control Act of 1968, or the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986. (See links) 
8. Carrying a firearm for purposes of self defense without legal permission as dictated by the state you live in.
9. Manufacturing of firearms without a proper license and registration with the BATFE. (Added December 2008)

Discussion of any of these topics can and often will be construed as "Conspiracy To Commit" violations of federal firearms laws. It has been and continues to be a method used by the ATF to leverage citizens through threats of jail time into working as informants. Please don't talk about this sort of thing, for your own sake.
