Burress Hoping to Return to NFL After Prison Term

• AP
[Jail for exercising his Right.]

The former Giants receiver pleaded guilty last week to attempted criminal possession of a weapon after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh at a Manhattan nightclub last November. He accepted a two-year prison term and is to be sentenced Sept. 22.

With prison just weeks away, he acknowledged he's especially anxious about being separated from his family.

A pity. In an interview Burress said he didn't know there was any legal consequence to carrying a firearm in Manhattan.

OOPS. In NYC firearms are basically illegal to own, let alone carry. Those really wanting firearms in NYC resort to antique muzzle-loading and black-powder firearms to skirt the law.

Next, the incident shows that Burress was an un-trained and irresponsible carrier. He stuck a loaded and fully charged firearm into the waist-band of his pants and carried it into a crowded night club. OOPS.

Next, the incident shows that Burress put everyone's life in danger that was present. For the simple fact that a firearm was discharged in a crowded night club. With at least one injury, albeit to Burress himself. OOPS.

I'm not defending the severity of his penalty but there are issues of some severity to be dealt with.

As Burress himself said in interview, thank God he didn't shoot anyone else.

He is going to do more time then Fat Ted ever did for either directly or indirectly causing the death of Mary Jo Kopechne.
