UN Human Rights Chief Falsely Blames Venezuela for Crimes Committed Against the Country

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

The US, NATO, Israel, and their imperial partners falsely blame victims of their hostile policies for crimes committed against them.

The UN high commissioner for human rights (UNCHR) operates the same way, serving Western interests, breaching the office's mandate.

The same goes for the world body's secretary general, appointed by the US to assure no UN actions taken against its high crimes.

UNCHR incumbent Michelle Bachelet was appointed to serve as a US-led Western imperial tool.

On July 4, America's Independence Day, while Trump's militarized observance was ongoing in Washington, perhaps not coincidentally she falsely accused Venezuela of human rights violations — committed against the nation by foreign dark forces headquartered in Washington.

Her remarks followed an official visit to Caracas from June 19 - 21 by invitation of its legitimate government, led by democratically elected and reelected Nicolas Maduro.

Her newly released UNHRC report on Venezuela reads like it was written by Trump regime hardliners — serving their interests, ignoring reality and rule of law principles.

Bachelet falsely accused Bolivarian officials of destabilizing the country and region. Her remarks were based on interviews with anti-government hardliners, wanting Maduro's government toppled.

She lied accusing Bolivarian civil and military forces of "arbitrary detentions, ill-treatment and torture of opposition elements," along with "excessive use of force during demonstrations."

During her visit to Caracas, she shamefully met with US-designated puppet/usurper in waiting Guaido and other anti-Bolivarian social democracy hardliners — traitors to their country.

They included anti-liberation theology/anti-social justice Catholic bishops, anti-Bolivarian business community officials, right-wing academics, and other likeminded figures — notably hostile to Maduro and Venezuelan social democracy.

She lied saying "rule of law in Venezuela ha(s) been profoundly eroded. The exercise of freedom of opinion, expression, association and assembly, and the right to participate in public life, entail a risk of reprisals and repression."

"Our report notes attacks against actual or perceived opponents and human rights defenders, ranging from threats and smear campaigns to arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment, sexual violence, and killings and enforced disappearance."

"Excessive and lethal force has repeatedly been used against protestors. My Office has also documented excessive use of force in the context of security operations by the Special Action Forces, with multiple killings, mainly of young men."

"Many may constitute extrajudicial killings, and should be fully investigated, with accountability of perpetrators, and guarantees of non-recurrence."

All of the above are bald-faced Big Lies and distortions, Bachelet falsely blaming Venezuela for US-orchestrated crimes against the country — similar hostile actions ongoing in other countries targeted by Washington for regime change.

Saying "(t)he Venezuelan people are enduring an economic breakdown," Bachelet gave short shrift to the effects of illegal US sanctions war, greatly escalated by Trump.

She said nothing about Washington's theft of $130 billion of Venezuelan assets since 2015, according to its Russian envoy Samuel Moncada.

If Caracas had access to these funds and no US sanctions war existed, its economy would be functioning normally.

Bachelet is guilty of pro-Western, pro-Israeli, anti-rule of law principles blame game politics — while ignoring horrific high crimes of war and against humanity committed by the US, NATO, and Israel against nonbelligerent states and people.

Like her predecessors, Bachelet shames the office she holds, using it to vilify Bolivarian social democracy instead of praising it and devoting her efforts to exposing and denouncing high crimes committed by the US and its imperial partners.

She concluded her remarks, saying "all Venezuelans deserve a better life, free from fear, and with access to adequate food, water, health-care, housing and all other basic human needs."

She failed to lay blame where it belongs for the state of things in the country. She was silent about horrific US human rights abuses at home and globally.

Serving Western interests, she blamed Maduro and Bolivarian governance for high crimes against the nation orchestrated in Washington.
