Drudge Report one liner: The government plans big revisions to historical economic data... Developing... Traditionally changes to economic data have been politically driven, including the change in focus from CPI to "core" CPI and from GNP to GDP. "Big revisions" in an activist government like Obama's is not a good sign.

A Democratic U.S. congressman has quietly introduced legislation to allocate tens of millions of dollars to create a social and behavioral research department to identify factors that influence energy consumption.

The new, covert social and behavioral sciences research program is to be mounted at the Department of Energy, according to the measure (HR 3247) proposed by Washington State Congressman Brian Baird. Its pressing mission will be to better understand social and behavioral factors that influence energy consumption and acceptance as well as adoption rates of new energy technologies.

The valuable social and behavioral data will be shoved down the respective throats of Energy Department divisions which will be forced to integrate its results into their work. This will, in turn, improve the design, development, demonstration and application of the nation's

As I have previously documented, Larry Summers is a big fat idiot. Unfortunately, idiocy is not limited to the White House economic team. Barney Frank - the congress member taking the laboring oar in "solving" the economic crisis - is also a big fat idiot. Frank is calling for credit default swaps to be limited to the giant "market makers". Given that it was the giants trading in cds which brought down the economy (see this and this), Frank's proposal would be like saying that only convicted arsonists can work on the fire department's fire suppression team.

Newly declassified documents reveal that an active member of Students for a Democratic Society and Port Militarization Resistance in Washington state was actually an informant for the US military. The man everyone knew as “John Jacob” was in fact John Towery, a member of the Force Protection Service at Fort Lewis. The military’s role in the spying raises questions about possibly illegal activity. The Posse Comitatus law bars the use of the armed forces for law enforcement inside the United States. The Fort Lewis military base denied our request for an interview. But in a statement to Democracy Now, the base’s Public Affairs office publicly acknowledged for the first time that Towery is a military operative. “This could be one of the key revelations of this era,” said Eileen Clancy, who has closely tracked government spying on activist organizations.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a revised $85 billion budget Tuesday that he said contained "the good, the bad and the ugly," including additional cuts to child welfare programs, health care for the poor and AIDS prevention efforts.

Schwarzenegger used his line-item veto authority to save an additional $656 million that will let the state restore a reserve fund he said is needed for tough times.

Democrats immediately protested the social spending reductions and threatened to block his political agenda during his final months in office.

"This kind of game playing by the governor doesn't bode well for success in terms of water, corrections, pensions or any of the other items the he is looking to in order to build some kind of real legacy," Assembly Speaker Karen Bass said.

The new budget should help the stat

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) speaking on the House floor: Now we've moved into the realm of gangster government. We have gangster government when the Federal Government has set up a new cartel and private businesses now have to go begging with their hand out to their local, hopefully well politically connected, Congressman or their Senator so they can buy a peace offering for that local business. Is that the kind of country we are going to have in the future? Video

Perhaps most Americans deserve the federal government they have. A government that, contrary to the lofty rhetoric of Barack Obama, is pure politics as usual. A government that is as corrupted by moneyed interests as ever. A government that is as dysfunctional and inefficient as ever.
