Letters of suport for Ed Vallejo.

Welcome and thanks for helping out our friend Ed.

The following guidelines and resources are provided by Ed's Lawyer, Matthew Peed. As usual, time is of the essence so please take a moment this weekend to complete this task. If not, continued submissions will be valuable going forward.

Step 1. Download the Word document template here or here.

Alternatively copy, and paste the following header into an email.

February 14, 2022
Hon. Amit P. Mehta
U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia
E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse
333 Constitution Ave. NW
Washington, DC 20001

Dear Judge Mehta,

Step 2: Write your supportive content.

The writer should tell who they are, what they do, and approximately how long they have known the client. The writers should not be modest about themselves. If the author is the president of the local bank, the assistant librarian, the treasurer of the Optimist Club, or a stay-at-home mom, that information should be proudly included. This lets the judge know about the writer and the writer's relationship with the client, and more importantly, the client's reputation and relationships in the community. Use letterhead if possible.

The writer should explain how they know the defendant (school, job, church, social, civic, or family) and for how long. This helps inform the judge about the client's interaction with, and his reputation in, the community.

Each letter should include one or two positive personality traits of our client (honesty, family man, good parent, a hard worker, etc.) and use examples to illustrate these traits.

Describe the kind of person s/he is, the activities you do together, including any helpful or positive activities s/he has done for you, your family, or the community—include as many specific feelings, details, and examples as possible.

State whether you believe this person is a danger to others.

Describe, if you can, any hardship you've experienced from the client's detention or (if you know) hardship for him, his family, and/or the community at large.

The writers should add anything else they want to put in their letters in their own words. Anything added should be informative, but concise.

The letters should not make disparaging remarks about the judge, the prosecutor, or any other officer of the court, or the victim. The letter should not minimize the seriousness of the offense or offer excuses. Focus on our client's positive traits.

Above all, offer any personal experiences or insights (with detailed anecdotes, if possible) that may help the Judge understand the client's true character.

You can "sign" your document by printing it out, actually signing it, taking a picture of it and including the picture with your submission. This is optional.

Responses in regular email are acceptable. Word and PDF documents are preferred
