‘Bee friendly’ plants may actually be toxic to bees, study finds

Bee colony collapse emerged in 2006 as a real problem around the world. It now touches all aspects of North American agriculture, as bees are responsible for the pollination that makes growing crops possible. Given the seriousness of the situation, many scientists have focused on researching the causes behind bee colony collapse. A new study co-authored by the Pesticide Research Institute and Friends of the Earth suggests that part of the cause may be due to inadvertent poisoning of bees by home gardeners. Sometimes home gardeners will purchase plants that are specifically designed to be “bee friendly,” but new research shows that these plants may actually be causing more harm than good, explains the Kansas City Star.
