­Egypt's Antiquities Minister told AP the discovery was made beneath the mortuary temple of King Amenhotep II. The temple of the seventh Pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, who reigned from 1427 to 1401 B.C., is situated on the west bank of the Nile.

According to Mohammed Ibrahim, the remains of human bones as well as wooden sarcophaguses have been unearthed inside the tombs.

The head of Luxor antiquities, Mansour Barek, explained that jars used to preserve the lungs, stomach, liver, and intestines of the deceased have also been found. The artefacts are said to be decorated with images of the four sons of the god Horus, believed to be vital to help the soul of the deceased find its way to heaven.
