Rangel again calls for military draft

• The Associated Press via the raw story
Rep. Charles Rangel is again calling for a military draft to highlight the fact that relatively few families are bearing a disproportionate burden in fighting the nation's wars.

The New York Democrat introduced a bill Thursday to reinstate the draft, a symbolic gesture that has no chance of becoming law. Rangel previously introduced similar legislation in 2003 and 2007.

Rangel said lawmakers who support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan should require "all who enjoy the benefits of our democracy to contribute to the defense of the country."

Rangel said he supports President Barack Obama's efforts to eventually bring troops home, but he wants it to happen faster.

Let Rangel be the first to shed blood for what he believes.

The invasion of Iraq and Afgh is not in defense of these United States of America.

There is no threat to the Americas and never has been.  The American people

have been set-up.  Terrorism is a myth to outrage the people and an excuse

to rape the countries of Afgh and Iraq and  working on Iran.  The invasion of

of the mid-east  has nothing to do with defending America and is not worth

one American soldier's life.

Zombie armies almost never kick serious butt. In the so-called civil war, zombie armies were regularly decimated by regulars from the South. No moral judgement there, just a little fact.

How right you are Temper. It's also unconstitutional.

The previous poster seems to be unaware of the 13th Amendment which reads:

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

And military conscription is nothing more, nothing less, and nothing other, than "involuntary servitude."

The theory is that the military protects the country, but the practical fact is that what it actually protects is . . . the GOVERNMENT.

And if the government is such that people don't want to voluntarily defend it, then one of two things is likely: either the government is corrupt and it doesn't deserve to be defended, or, the citizenry are corrupt and they don't deserve the government. Either way, the government shoud fall so that  the citizenry will get what they deserve.

But you probaby already know that; the previous poster doesn't.

The military draft is nothing less than slavery.

There is one reason the so called low income poor family types are in the military.  It's for the income and benifits which far exceed what they could could expect to get outside the military, period.  I do believe that military service should be compulasory.
