Europe's Shame

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Post-WW II, US-orchestrated new world order transformed sovereign Western European countries into virtual US colonies.

Agreeing to join the CIA-created EU, along with becoming part of US-dominated NATO, made them easier to control as vassal states — serving its geopolitical interests, even when harming their own.

Washington's political, economic, and military leverage over the continent greatly increased after Soviet Russia's December 1991 dissolution, gaining control over most Eastern European countries.

In 1776, US colonies broke from Britain by declaring their sovereign independence, a new nation created free from foreign control.

Will Europe one day decide against submissiveness to Washington and declare their own independence? Or will they remain client states, sacrificing what no nations should relinquish to others.

After Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018, followed by multiple rounds of illegal sanctions on Iran, EU states effectively abandoned the nuclear deal by observing them.

Time and again, its ruling authorities yield to a higher power in Washington — at the expense peace, equity, justice, and upholding the rule of law.

When the US goes to war against nations threatening no one, what naked aggression is all about, most EU/NATO nations are willing coalition partners.

They support illegally imposed unilateral US sanctions on Russia, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, and other countries, flagrant breaches of international law.

Their pledge to have normal political, economic, financial, and trade relations with Iran following the JCPOA's adoption proved hollow — proving like Washington they can't be trusted.

Europe's promise to create a financial transaction mechanism to circumvent SWIFT in dealings with Iran has been a mirage so far.

Its mountainous pledged produced a mouse, applying only to Iranian imports of goods not sanctioned by the Trump regime, going along with its boycott of Iranian oil and other exports, again proving their submissiveness to Washington matters more than upholding the rule of law, including international agreements and binding Security Council resolutions.

On Tuesday, Foreign Ministers of Britain, France, Germany, and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini disgraced themselves more than already by a joint statement on Iran and the JCPOA, saying the following:

They "express deep concern that Iran is pursuing activities inconsistent with its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA)."

Fact: Iran remains in full compliance with JCPOA provisions, increasing the amount and purity of its enriched uranium its legal right under the agreement's Articles 26 and 36.

Along with the Trump regime, Europe breached its JCPOA obligations by failing to maintain normal relations with Iran as mandated by the deal, especially by not buying its oil and related products, going along with the White House breach instead of opposing it by actions, not rhetoric.

Its member states surrendered to a higher US power, supporting the Trump regime's illegal pullout by observing its unlawful sanctions, these countries breaching international law by their actions.

"The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has now confirmed that Iran has started enriching uranium above the maximum allowed limit stipulated in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action."

Fact: The JCPOA permits the increase, Iran's legal right, because the deal's Western signatories breached their obligations, rendering it null and void unless Europe reverses its unlawful actions.

"We express deep concern that Iran is not meeting several of its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action."

The remark is a bald-faced Big Lie, Europe falsely blaming Iran for its own JCPOA breach.

"Iran has stated that it wants to remain within the JCPoA."

Fact: Indeed so, but only if a viable agreement continues to exist, not the case with Europe's effective pullout.

Iran "must act accordingly by reversing these activities and returning to full JCPoA compliance without delay."

Fact: Europe must stop pointing fingers at Iran's legitimate actions and "revers(e) (its breach)…returning to full JCPoA compliance without delay."

"These compliance issues must be addressed within the framework of the JCPoA, and a Joint Commission should be convened urgently?."

Actions going forward must address unlawful actions by the US and Europe.

The IAEA should denounce their JCPOA breach, while continue to support Iran's compliance with its obligations under the deal.

"We call on all parties to act responsibly towards deescalating ongoing tensions regarding Iran's nuclear activities.?"

Deescalation begins by Europe breaking with the Trump regime and fulfilling its JCPOA obligations, while ceasing to falsely blame Iran for its own breach of the deal.

That's the only way to turn things around and save it. Otherwise it's doomed, the US-led West fully to blame.
