Earth Day April 22 2011 – What went wrong?

In 1970, I participated in the First Earth Day on the Michigan State University campus. I felt that all of humanity would see how poorly we treated the planet and that we would all come together to change course and move toward a sustainable future.

In that 41 years since the first Earth Day, we added 112 million more Americans to this already overloaded country, and the citizens of the planet added another 5.0 billion human beings.  You have to wonder how inept, how stupid, how dull, how trivial our species in our quest to dominate, destroy and crush the environmental systems that make this planet sustainable for all living things.

Right now, we cause the “6th Extinction Session” whereby we kill off about 80 to 100 species per day because of our human onslaught of their habitat.  We create horrific carbon footprint that acidifies the oceans and wreaks havoc with our biosphere. We dump 80,000 chemicals into the land, air and water daily 24/7.  We expand beyond carrying capacity on every continent except Antarctica.

What went wrong?  Why did we grow worse than better? What fate do face?

Eric Rimmer, www.populationmatters.org in the United Kingdom brings it home:

“Since the first Earth Day was held in 1970 to focus attention on “the crisis of the environment”, the world population has almost doubled and will reach 7 billion in the next twelve months,”  reported Population Matters. “Not surprisingly, humanity’s impact on the environment has increased, too. It is estimated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature that the current rate of species extinction is between 1,000 and 10,000 above natural levels.

“The causes are human: converting natural areas to farming and urban development, introducing invasive alien species, polluting or over-exploiting resources including water and soils and harvesting wild plants and animals at unsustainable levels.

“At the same time, manmade climate change is increasingly posing a threat to the wellbeing of all life, human and animal alike. Moreover, those seeking to satisfy humanity’s ever-growing needs are often proposing even greater exploitation of our environment: more intensive farming and exploitation of the resources of ever less accessible regions.

“That’s inevitable in a world where competition can be unrestrained and many are on the borderline of survival. However, the only answer in the long term is to limit our demand to renewable resources, not to squeeze ever more from a finite planet. Such limiting of demand means more sustainable lifestyles and adopting green technologies, but it should include addressing our numbers, too.

“The ways to lower our birth rate are well-known, and successful where adopted. They include alleviating poverty, encouraging women’s rights and reducing infant and maternal mortality. Above all, they include universal access to affordable family planning and the adoption of reliable modern methods of contraception to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies. Recent years have seen gross underinvestment in this area: in part, because funds have been diverted to the treatment of AIDS. That’s understandable, but AIDS and family planning shouldn’t compete for funds. Effective family planning, leading to lower birth rates and ultimately smaller populations, is fundamental to a sustainable future in a healthy environment.”

Forty-one years later, we’re so far behind the eight ball that we may not be able to save our species from mass starvation and utter destruction of our biosphere—but we must try.

There is no such thing as unsustainable resources -- food, energy, economy. These are replenished faster than consumed. The thinking that the world's resources are finite or limited was prevalent in Malthus' time -- it is now so medieval, as old as people of the olden days believed that the world is flat. There are still remnants of this belief today. For example, our economy does not shrink as time goes by. It is forever expanding. Technology is the common denominator to all these changes. Now we can create space in the air for humans to live ... create even humans in the lab, etc.  Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to accept the fact that the world is round, not flat ... so to speak!

Never mind Frosty. Scaring people that the world would end because the supply of food and energy is going kaput if population expands because babies are not killed in the womb or at birth [infanticide] and people do not die of sickness, in war, famine, etc., is just a cure of neurosis and writing about it is only an outlet. Hardly readers believe him anyway. He claims he is being discredited. Not quite ... before you can be discredit, you must first have a credit to your name.  He has not earned that credit yet ... perhaps never, the way he turns himself into a clown making people laught with his emotional joke warning them that they would fall over the edge if they don't listen to him, because in his mind the world is flat.

you people are forgetting there were different species of humans at one point. So homosapien population levels would have started to increase after we became dominate over the other human species and other beasts by working together and advancing how we interacted with each other. Back then death by beast was very common back then.

Neanderthals lived an estimated 24,000 to 32,000 years ago. So based off of that we gained our global population count 6.77 billion people in that time.

As stated above 23% of Earth is land. We removing massive amounts of land every day to fill growing wants and needs of our population. Think about how much land will be needed not just for housing, but industry, retail, and agriculture over just the next ten years. And that isn't including land needed for roads.

Awareness is needed, and our planet does not have unlimited resources. Hence why we are shifting to shale oil, fracking more often, proposing drilling and mining in nature reserves even if we know it will kill the wildlife. Just like the US economy, constantly spending resources we do not truly have is not sustainable forever.

Remember today is Earth Day April 22, 2011. America has such limitless resources and such space above and beneath that it could accommodate a billion people more in the next 100 million years! And it is still continuously creating new worlds … space on land, on the sea and ocean floor and beyond, and our technology is continuously creating and producing human resources more than we Americans need. We are in a state of food and wealth overload that we share it with the rest of the world.

Don’t get whacked by madcap anti-population crazies that Planet Earth will run out of food and energy. Modern technology can produce food out of any growing or living things beyond what humans need. Earth’s food and energy can outlast human existence on Earth for the next ten billion years, or for as long as the Sun shines and for as long as this planet stays in the Galaxy.

You can start knowing all these here: http://www.answers.com/topic/food-security. Today the expectation is that new advances in agriculture, particularly in biotechnology, will increase agricultural productivity sufficiently to feed a world population expected to stabilize at about 9.3 billion. This expectation, together with abundant global grain supplies at record low prices, has removed the specter of food insecurity…

World population is expected to stabilize – not jump over the edge as anti-population-overload hippies in the Web like the above freaked out writer predicted – at 9.3 billion, at which point the number starts to decline and settles at a certain level before it reverts its way back up again.

This endless cycle repeats eternally, even after any writing screwball like this one has long been gone!

Remember today is Earth Day April 22, 2011. 29% of Earth is land. What percentage of Earth is inhabited by humans? Just 1%. It will take 290 million years for humans to occupy space on Earth. But that will not happen because scientists had studied and concluded that by reaching 9.0 billion, the human specie will start to decline – the law of diminishing return.

After 41, years, NOTHING WENT WRONG … except the aging mind of the author.

Gentlemen: you get your facts straight and then, you will catch up to me.  My facts are verifiable and reliable.  We stand at 6.9 billion today and we face another 3 billion people within 40 to 50 years.  The earth cannot sustain it. And, start sucking on that $5.00 per gallon gas as it heads up to $10 a gallon and tell me how you will feed that 6.9 billion when 18 million already starve to death annually in 2011.  If you're going to attempt to discredit me, you better get your facts straight and your mind around the addition of 100 million more people added to the USA. If you can't or won't , your kids will live the nightmare. I've been there and you haven't. I stand my ground against your "Pope-Like" minds.  FW

Powell Gammill To Frosty: Get your "facts" strait Frosty. 41 years ago the pop was around 3.5 billion. Effectively we doubled in 41 years. And I suspect the planet could support 60 billion of us.

Gammill, it’s no use. Frosty can’t count, that’s why you can’t count on him.

He can’t read either or understand what he reads. I have given him his reading lesson, but he neither couldn’t read nor understand what he reads.

The reading lesson I gave to him is as follows:

" Frosty, let’s educate skeptics and overpopulation innumerates: What percentage of Earth is inhabited by humans? 29% of Earth is land, and hardly only 1% is occupied by humans. When did humans first walk on the face of the Earth? Some ten millions years ago, according to famous Paleonanthropologists, scientists who study fossil remains of ancient peoples. Now use your imagination and see for yourself how slow the rate of human occupancy of space on Earth is.

"One percent in 10,000,000 years means the land on Earth will be fully occupied and/or inhabited by humans for the next 290 million years starting today. The fear of lack of space on Earth for humans to inhabit at its saturation point of population increase estimated at 9.3 billion inhabitants as marketed by population freaks, will occur sometime in 290 million years! But even then this is impossible when the population that saturates at 9.3 billion scales down, and by that time less number of humans would occupy space. Got it?

http://www.freedomsphoenix.com/Letter-to-Editor.htm?EdNo=001&Info=0120147 . . . Immigration & Population Lies That Our World Will End Should Be Exposed

Easy to explain why he can’t count. There was this cartoon of Frosty as a kindergarten math teacher with a math credential he learned by riding his bicycle around a drug public cove on Hell Street, Colorado Spring, Colorado. Confused, Confucius compared him to a squirrel nut who runs up a woman’s legs looking for nuts.

He always writes about population control … depopulation through famine, infanticide, genocide and war. In war, he could not determine who is right … he could only determine what is left. In his writings, he always jumps off the cliff, and sooner or later, to his last conclusion.
