FAUSTIAN DILEMMA AND HOBSON’S CHOICE FOR COLORADO: WATER

By Frosty Wooldridge

With an added six million people by mid century, Colorado faces a daunting future when the question of water trickles into the picture.  Notice how much rain and snow fell on the Front Range this winter?  Not much!  Why? We live in a semi-arid region. That’s why you see few trees anywhere on the Great Plains of Colorado.

In a Denver Post exclusive, “Water plan hits wall of foes,” March 9, 2009, by Mark Jaffe, “Shell oil wants to pump 15 billion gallons from the untapped Yampa River west of Craig and fill a 1,000 acre reservoir for oil shale development…a water war is brewing on the Yampa River.”

Jaffe wrote, “The battle runs from Parker, to Dinosaur National Monument…Shell is seeking a conditional water right to take up to 375 cubic feet per second, about 8 percent of the Yampa average April to June flow.”

“If we tie up all the available water on the West Slope, what will happen to us on the east slope?” asked Jim Nikkel, assistant manager of the Parker Water and Sewer District.

Jaffe wrote, “Many of the groups filing opposition letters are just seeking more information—such as the one from the Colorado State Engineer.”

Astoundingly, filings included the Sierra Club. Roger Singer, the club’s western regional representative said, “Colorado’s future is the issue here.”

What forces this discussion, but what issue never receives exposure in this discussion?

Everything driving the water crisis originates via hyper-population growth.  Every crisis we face stems from overpopulation.  The reason Shell thrusts itself into water rights issue stems from the fact that this nation faces a declining oil future.

Colorado added 1.5 million people in the last 15 years.  It adds 100,000 people annually.  Demographic projections show exponential population growth increasing, and by 2050, Colorado faces a mind numbing five to six million added humans.  Because of it, the Denver Post in a piece by Mike Matz, “Losing Spaces” showed this state lost 1.65 million acres in the past 15 years to concrete and asphalt and expects to lose 3.1 million more acres by 2022. The destruction race in this state knows no bounds!

But, did you hear one mention about moving toward a stable population?  Living within carrying capacity? Ecological footprint?  Resource depletion?  No!  You didn’t! It is as if the Denver Post, on purpose, via ‘political correctness’ which provides them with a 21st century form of censure—will not address the great taboo.

Did journalist Jaffe interview any population experts like Governor Lamm, Dr. Albert Bartlett, Rob Beck, Fred Elbel, Stan Weekes or Dr. Diana Hull?  No!  Let’s make sure NOT to address what’s causing our crisis.

In other words, let’s continue our Faustian dilemma where we sell our water rights and souls in the present to make sure our children pay a terrible price in the future when we actually DO run out of water to grow crops, feed livestock and sustain ourselves.

Does the Denver Post avoid this issue on purpose?  You bet! Let’s not deal with reality!  Let’s press the population gas pedal to the floor until we cannot solve our water, energy and resource dilemmas.

In other words, let’s give future generations Hobson’s Choice:  in 2050, they will be offered two alternatives. If they pick door #1, they will walk over a cliff.  If they pick door #2, they will walk into quicksand.

It’s way past time for the Denver Post to run a series on our overpopulation dilemma.  It’s time for our leaders to stand up, speak out and engage a “Colorado Sustainable Population Policy” and “Colorado Water Usage Policy.”

If they don’t you may read it in the www.Examiner.com under my byline:  Our Troubled Country.

To keep reporting about the symptoms proves as stupid as taking the pie out of the oven after it’s already burned to a crisp.  It’s as dumb as installing seat belts in a bus after 50 kids have been killed in a crash without seatbelts. It’s as insane as boarding an airplane that must fly six hours over water to its destination but the captain only filled the tanks with three hours worth of fuel.

I invite the Denver Post, journalist Mark Jaffe and Governor Ritter of Colorado to act responsibly toward the future by addressing hyper-population growth by stabilizing it today so future generations may enjoy a viable and sustainable life future.

Roy Beck gives a graphic presentation of our fate if we continue to allow legal and illegal immigration to swamp this country. If you have children, you will be particular unnerved at their fate. I know Roy Beck personally and his integrity and knowledge stand at the top. Pass this web site 14 minute video far and wide across America to educate everyone you know. We either stop this human tsunami or the future of this country will be much like Rome's. We must, as a nation and a civilization, move to secure our country from this massive, unrelenting population overload from a line that never ends. This will be the most compelling 14 minute video of your life.

Bob Woodruff of ABC asked input from all citizens concerning the future of our planet.  Go to www.earth2100.tv for a sobering reality check as to what we face and to what I have been writing about for the past 20 years.  Our ‘window’ to change to a balanced population and non-polluting energy diminishes every day we listen to irresponsible media and thus ignore the blatant symptoms manifesting all over America and the planet.

This three minute interview with Adam Schrager on “Your Show” May 4, 2008, NBC Channel 9 News, addresses the ramifications of adding 120 million people to USA in 35 years and six million people to Colorado as to water shortages, air pollution, loss of farmland, energy costs and degradation of quality of life.  In the interview, Frosty Wooldridge explains the ramifications of adding 120 million people to the USA in 35 years. He advances new concepts such as a “Colorado Carrying Capacity Policy”; “Colorado Environmental Impact Policy”; “Colorado Water Usage Policy”; “Colorado Sustainable Population Policy”.  Nationally, the USA needs a "National Sustainable Population Policy" to determine the carrying capacity of this nation for the short and long term.  Wooldridge is available for interviews on radio and TV having interviewed on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and FOX.
