LIVE: President Biden will deliver his State of the Union address tonight

• NPR

President Biden is delivering his State of the Union address tonight before a joint session of Congress and will make his case for a second term in office to one of the biggest television audiences he will have all year.

It's happening just two days after former President Donald Trump dominated Republican primaries on Super Tuesday and became the last remaining major candidate for the 2024 Republican nomination. Polls currently show the race between Biden and Trump will be tight. This speech gives Biden a chance to draw a contrast with Trump on issues where he thinks he can energize Democratic supporters and persuade independents.

Here's what we're following:

What's at stake for Biden? The president quelled concerns in his party last year about his age when he pulled off a dynamic State of the Union address. Can he do that again this year as the general election kicks off? He's likely to talk about reproductive rights, support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, border security and the ongoing conflict in Gaza, including a new port for aid deliveries.

Who is Katie Britt? She's the first-term Republican senator from Alabama selected by party leaders to deliver the GOP response to Biden. It's likely that Trump will loom large in her remarks.

When does it start? The address begins at 9 p.m. ET. You can watch it here on this live blog that will also stream a live, in-studio stream of NPR's special coverage.
