'Alexa, how much do you cost?' Amazon is planning to launch a paid-for version of its AI voi

• https://www.dailymail.co, By DANIEL JONES

Amazon plans to launch a subscription for Alexa on June 30, internal documents reveal.

The revamp of the voice assistant will likley be called Alexa Plus, but there is no clue yet on the price. It could be bundled with a Prime subscription.

It will be more conversational and offer more personalization to individuals, according to Business Insider.

But internal arguments about how it should work might hold back the already delayed launch.

Around 15,000 customers have been testing the new underlying voice technology under the codename Remarkable Alexa. There is still debate about using that name or Alexa Plus.

These external tests have found that Alexa's answers are still not meeting expectations - and, as is common with AI generally, there is inaccurate information being shared.

Amazon was the early leader with voice control and Alexa became a household name - and had the most users for many years after launch in 2016.

But Google's Assistant and Apple's Siri have now overtaken, with 88.8 million and 84.2 million respectively in the US. Alexa is down in third with 75.6 million.

And Amazon has not yet worked out how to make money from Alexa-powered devices like its Echo speakers. It laid offa bout 10,000 people November 2022.

A subscription plan is a way to make money.
