On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin had a simple, but stark, message for Ukrainians: 

"Ukraine's counteroffensive failed. If this continues, the question of their statehood will soon arise."

"Stop fighting and your country will remain the country you love; keep fighting and everything you think you're fighting for will be destroyed."
