The tropical Mexican city of Acapulco woke up Wednesday to find the metro ripped apart by an 'unimaginable' Category 5 hurricane, where roofs were ripped from buildings and cars were submerged by torrential floodwaters. 

Hurricane Otis brought 165mph winds and heavy rain to Acapulco and surrounding towns overnight, registering as the strongest storm to ever make landfall along the North American Pacific coast.

The storm sparked fears among meteorologists after morphing from a tropical storm into a massive typhoon in just 12 hours, with the sudden escalation seemingly catching many off guard in the vacation hotspot. 

No deaths have been reported as of Wednesday afternoon, however striking images revealed widespread destruction across the Guererro State, a coastline territory marked by cartel activity. 

Otis is not projected to impact the United States, with the hurricane downgraded from a Category 5 to a Category 1 storm before midday and expected to dissipate overnight Wednesday.
