'The entire country supports a shift away from fossil fuels': AOC calls Biden's SOTU spe

U.S. Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said President Joe Biden's State of the Union address 'left a little to be desired' for Democrats because he did not push issues like renewable energy, student loan debt, education or immigration.

The New York Democrat said Biden's speech on Tuesday, where he focused on COVID recovery and the conflict in the Ukraine, failed to capitalize on moving away from Russian oil by committing to green energy.

'I think it was a lost opportunity,' Ocasio-Cortez, 32, told MSNBC. 'There is profound bipartisan support to a long-term shift away from fossil fuels.'

She added that Biden had glossed over issues of 'crisis in education,' student loan debt and immigration, key issues that she said deserved the Democratic party's focus.

Ocasio-Cortez said that while Biden's order to release America's oil reserves would help deal a blow to dependency from Russia and help alleviate soaring gas prices which were expected to hit a nationwide average of $4 per gallon, she said the U.S. needed a major change away from fossil fuels.

'When we talk about releasing strategic reserves, these are short-term solutions in order to prevent price shocks,' she said, 'But, at the end of the day … we shouldn't be relying on fossil fuels to begin with.'

She added that Biden's push for more electric vehicles was a step in the right direction, but needs to be expanded upon.
