At Least 50 Killed in Heavy Fighting Around Yemen's Maarib

• by Jason Ditz

Backed by Saudi airstrikes, the Yemeni government pushed into the western districts near the city of Maarib over the weekend, engaging in intense fighting that left at least 50 killed, and dozens of others wounded.

As is often the case, the government's statement claimed the overwhelming majority of casualties were Houthis, with "more than 44" Houthis killed, and only six soldiers killed on their side.

The Houthis have not confirmed the casualties, but reported at least 17 Saudi airstrikes in the Sirwah District. They did not elaborate beyond that on what was hit or who was killed.
