The Illinois Reproductive Health Act would also remove criminal penalties for abortion doctors and eliminate a mandate which requires parental consent for minors who seek to have abortions.

The Illinois chapters of the ACLU and Planned Parenthood are both championing the legislation.

LifeNews reports that "ACLU Illinois Executive Director Colleen Connell said that "the new relaxed abortion measures allowing for more late-term abortions and fewer parental rights simply '[gets] rid of all the really bad stuff' in the state's current abortion law."

"House Bill 40 was a very courageous and important first step, and now we're actually moving down the path of making the vision and the values of House Bill 40 a reality," Connell said to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The new measures haven't been voted on yet, but will likely pass the state legislature. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker already said he "looks forward to reviewing the legislation and working with advocates to protect women's rights."
