Elon Musk tweeted out how the escape pods built for the Thai cave rescue could be made to work in space.

There could be situations in space with injured astronauts or when there are tourists in space where space suits would not work. Escape pods will be needed in space.

There have and will be situations on earth with overturned cruise ships where escape pods would be needed.
