Planes, Trains and Roads to Nowhere

• usnews.com

President Donald Trump this week rolled out an infrastructure plan designed to pump $1.5 trillion into improving America's weathered roads, bridges, ports and railways.

The blueprint calls for the federal government to chip in $200 billion to fund incentive programs and investment opportunities, essentially opening the door to private backers and state and local governments to do most of the heavy lifting.

Lawmakers have for years broadly agreed that infrastructure improvements should be a priority that the government should address, but they've failed to reach a compromise on how best to fund the significant investments needed just to get America's infrastructure up to where it should be in 2018.

Trump's plan included certain aspects that are likely to see bipartisan approval, but lawmakers on both sides of the aisle were reluctant to throw their support behind a plan that's unlikely to generate much buzz on Capitol Hill without significant tweaks.
