David Cameron on Brexit turmoil: Not my problem

• Politico

LONDON — Keep calm and carry on.

That is what Britain is supposed to do in times of crisis. Political turmoil is all a bit, well, French. But Westminster is anything but calm right now.

British politics is convulsed. David Cameron will be gone in 10 weeks. Labour MPs are crying on the radio calling for their leader to resign and quitting en masse. Scotland could be lost, Northern Ireland is back in flux and even Gibraltar's future is in doubt.

The prime minister had promised to "steady the ship" while the Tory party chose a successor, but with markets in turmoil and the pound collapsing the boat is listing alarmingly.

Who is in charge? What happens next? No one knows.

A new Tory leader will be in place by September 2 with Britain heading for a fresh general election as early as October 13. But if by then the U.K. is in the depths of a Brexit recession, the new prime minister may choose to delay the election. Nothing is certain.
