TSA airport lines: Chronicle of a mess foretold

• politico.com

Both the Obama administration and Congress knew nearly a year ago that travelers would face long lines at airports this summer. But now that the nightmare is here — and awaiting millions of passengers this Memorial Day weekend — hopes for lasting relief are nowhere in sight.

Instead, the Transportation Security Administration is scrambling on several fronts: scurrying to deploy more officers at checkpoints, cajoling travelers to sign up for its PreCheck expedited-screening program and debating short-term options such as increased reliance on bomb-sniffing dogs and airline-paid contract workers to speed up lines. But the agency is also struggling to explain the mess to lawmakers amid widespread complaints about missed flights and hours-long queues, including one logjam that prompted American Airlines to roll out cots for stranded travelers at Chicago's O'Hare International.
