Monsanto's Roundup Sales Have Decreased 12% In Just 3 Months

• True Activist

It looks like the beginning of the end for biotech company Monsanto. According to Reuters, not only have sales for the company's most popular herbicide, Roundup, dropped by 12% in the past three months, its GM corn – one of its key products – has dropped by 5%.

"Sales of corn seeds and traits, Monsanto's key products, fell 5 percent to $598 million in the quarter. And sales at the company's agricultural productivity unit, which includes Roundup herbicide, dropped 12 percent to $1.1 billion."

However, this should be anything but shocking news. A number of health concerns caused by glyphosate, the main ingredient in the herbicide, have been documented in recent years. Activists are well-aware that the toxic concoction contributes to a number of cancers, among other concerns.

In addition, the World Health Organization's IARC labeled glyphosate – the main ingredient in Monsanto's RoundDup herbicide – to be "probably carcinogenic" earlier this year. In result of the determination, bans on the main ingredient have been cropping up all around the world.

For example, Swiss and German retail outlets are banning Roundup due to customer concerns about the chemicals and their health, and Sri Lanka banned glyphosate shortly after the WHO determined it to be toxic. In addition, the French minister asked all nurseries to stop selling Roundup, and Lowes and Home Depot (retail giants in the US) have stopped selling Roundup – a brilliant first step.

Though Monsanto is still making a ton of money – even with a 12% drop in its Roundup sales – this news is proof that activists' efforts are working.
