What Deep Web's Director Learned Investigating Silk Road

If you happen to turn on Epix on Sunday and wonder if you've actually landed on the nightly news, you won't be alone. Director Alex Winter's new documentary Deep Web is about as of-the-moment as they come—so timely that its investigation into the trial of Silk Road mastermind Ross Ulbricht is coming right on the heels of Ulbricht's sentencing today.

But Winter hopes his documentary provides "another perspective on a story you're hearing about right now."

"The story that's going to have legs down the road is the salacious one—'the Internet is Breaking Bad,'" Winter says. "I just don't care about that story at all. I don't think that's actually true to what happened."

The director has been working on his documentary on Silk Road and Ulbricht, who was convicted of being the narcotics site's Dread Pirate Roberts in February, pretty much since he finished up his Napster documentary, Downloaded, in 2013. And throughout that process he found himself in some of the darker corners of the Internet trying to figure out how the online drug bazaar got so big—and exactly who was behind it (more on that in a bit). It took a toll. "My next film is called Rainbows and Unicorns," Winter jokes.
