Google may be leading the way with its self-driving car, but it looks like it may have even loftier ambitions - to produce self-flying passenger jets.

Dave Vos, head of Google's Project Wing, has said he believes passenger aircraft should be controlled by robotic drones rather than human pilots in the future.

He said that current work to develop drones to ferry cargo around the world could be extended to fly people as well.

Mr Vos, who last year unveiled Google's research project that has been testing a single sing drone to deliver packages to remote farms in Australia, said: 'Let's take unmanned all the way.

'That's a fantastic future to aim for.'
