Nepal Earthquake Triggers Substantial Economic Aftershock

International aid is flooding into Nepal as the small Asian nation reels from this weekend's massive earthquake that killed more than 4,000 people, injured more than 7,000 and demolished tens of thousands of residents' homes.

Saturday's initial tremor and subsequent aftershocks rocked densely-populated areas in and around Kathmandu and throughout a country home to a particularly popular route to the top of Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain above sea level.

The quake and its aftershocks triggered Everest avalanches that killed at least 18 people, including Google executive Dan Fredinburg, and stranded dozens more. Rescue efforts reportedly continued into Monday to recover still-marooned climbers.

In what now serves as a grim precursor to the worst earthquake Nepal has seen in more than 80 years, GeoHazards International earthquake safety nonprofit on April 12 posted a report to its website that described Kathmandu as the city with the greatest potential for earthquake lethality in all of Asia.
