This reminds us of something important. The protestant reformation was driven by a direct, even naive, reading of the scriptures of Christianity that then confronted a tradition of compromise. This led to fanaticism and disasterous results. Centuries of maturation has ended all that but the lesson remains. Islam is doing the exact same thing but with a text that is actually promoting the worse instincts of humanity. Thus we have this modern flare up of Islamic violence that promises to be beyond compromise. At least this provides us a clear historical analogy that works to furthering our understanding..
