Americans live in a country where water and electricity can easily be accessed with a simple flick of a switch or turning of a faucet. Northeast portions of the country were affected by losses of electricity in 1965 and 2003. New York City and surrounding areas experienced a dramatic blackout in 1977 that lasted over a week in some locales.
