U.N. to deploy unarmed drones over Democratic Republic of Congo

• upi.com
The peacekeeping mission will use the unarmed drones, beginning Dec. 9, to monitor the forested border long suspected to harbor the main arms supply routes for rebel groups in the Congo, The Wall Street Journal reported U.N. military mission spokesman Felix Basse said. Human rights activists have criticized the United Nations for not doing enough to end the Congo's violent insurgencies, but in 2013, U.N. peacekeepers helped the Congolese army defeat the M23 rebel group, the first time in a decade the Congo's military has stopped a major rebellion. The U.N. Security Council authorized a 3,000-member combat contingent earlier this year after M23 rebels overran the Congolese commercial hub of Goma.
