So now we’ve got The Bolt, a prototype of a car that can drive at a completely pointless, wildly dangerous and breathtakingly exciting 340 mph. Why? Who knows?

This baby packs a 7.0-litre LS7 V8, which normally produces 505 horsepower but in this case is wired to put out 640 horsepower. There's even a version that can reach 800. We’re talking 0 to 60 in 2 seconds flat.

By using an awful lot of carbon and Kevlar in the car as well as a lightweight aluminum space frame, The Bolt claims to be light enough to for these speeds to be realistic.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the land speed record for an auto is currently 257.87, held by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and achieved in 2010. It had 1,184 horsepower. So The Bolt must be pretty freaking light to hit 340. Still, we're hopeful.

Cars like this are generally built from the ground up, depending on a customer’s specific needs. It appears the pricy version of The Bolt will run you about $1.2 million.
