Their products aren’t just for the consumer’s personal gain. The company, founded by UC Berkeley students Alejandro Velez and Nikhil Arora in 2009, is committed to creating tools that combine personal food growing, educational resources, and beautiful design. Back to the Roots products are designed as sustainability lessons for kids, both in schools and in their communities.

 

The duo’s vision and mission is “to make food personal again through the passionate development of tools that educate and inspire, one family at a time.” The creators got the idea from turning waste into fresh, local food, a project they began during their college years while working in their fraternity’s kitchen.
