The Drone Threat - by Ron Paul

• Ron Paul's Texas Straight Talk

Last week, Senators threatened to put a “hold” on the nomination of John Brennan to be CIA director over his refusal to answer questions about the use of drones to kill Americans on US soil. That the president’s nominee to head the agency that has used drones to kill perhaps thousands overseas could not deny their possible use at home should be shocking. How did we get to this point?

The problem is not "drones" -- which is just a deliberately scarey word for a MODEL AIRPLANE.  Model airplanes have very limited payloads, and are easily shot down, come to that.  The problem is a president who blithely admits his intention to kill US citizens without trial.

Now the US has always had assassination teams, usually attached to the military, for taking out specific enemy targets, but the problem today is that the US' chief assassination team is run by the CIA, which has a very bad track record for secrecy, irresponsibility, and inaccuracy.  When a US citizen makes war against the US, that's called "treason", for which the penalty is death -- no problem there.  If he's actually fighting in the enemy lines, the military will simply shoot him in the course of battle.  If he's captured, he can be properly tried -- and then shot.  If, as an enemy combatant, he's to be singled out for assassination, the decision should be in the hands of the military -- not the CIA.
