How a children's cartoon led to a new military weapon

Strange things have inspired designers of military weapons in the past. Some weapons engineers created new systems based on dreams, others by taking off-the-shelf technology and weaponizing it. Some even set off on a bizarre odyssey to weaponize the Naga Viper, officially rated as the world's hottest chili pepper—so hot it can kill with one bite. But one weapon investigated for the Pentagon's burgeoning arsenal came from a children's cartoon. If that sounds like the opening of a bad joke told by a tipsy defense contractor executive at an industry conference it's not. It's true.
