Imax Comes to China

• slatest.slate.com
Imax will open 75 new theaters in China to meet soaring demand for movie entertainment amongst the country's burgeoning middle class, reports the New York Times. Imax, known for its giant vertigo-inducing screens, will build the theatres by 2014 in a $100 million deal with Chinese theatre operator Wanda Cinema. There are currently 45 Imax theatres in China, and the company plans to open 300 by 2016. The deal underscores the growing importance of cinema in Chinese culture. The Chinese government has made the film business a growth priority, building new theaters and supporting local film production. This is motivated in part by a desire to spread Chinese culture globally with film.
