KFC is looking to expand across Africa's pristine fast-food frontier, reports the Wall Street Journal. KFC's
parent company Yum Brands hopes to open 600 more restaurants across the
continent and double its revenue to $2 billion by 2014. "Africa wasn't even on our radar screen 10 years ago, but now we see it
exploding with opportunity," said Yum CEO David Novak. Greater political
stability and a burgeoning middle class have prompted Yum to consider
expanding its fried chicken empire from its initial stores in South
Africa into Nigeria, Namibia, Ghana, and other countries. For many
Africans, a trip to KFC is a special treat. "The KFC brand is highly
aspirational in Africa. People will save up to buy the $3 meal, even if
only once every three months," said the general manager of Yum in
Africa, Keith Warren. He added that although KFC's Africa menus are
essentially the same as those in the United States, the chain has cut
down on boneless items like nuggets. "Africans are wary of processed
food," he said. "They want chicken on the bone."
