Declaration of Independence coming to Arizona Capitol

PHOENIX -- Arizonans will get a chance at a rare viewing of one of the original copies of the Declaration of Independence this month.

Capitol officials say one of the original 26 copies of the document will be at the State Capitol for a pair of viewings, one of them open free to the public.

This copy, one of about 200 original Dunlap Broadsides printed on July 4, 1776, was believed lost to history but rediscovered in 1989 by a flea market shopper who found it hidden behind a picture frame he bought for $4.

In 2000, Hollywood producer Norman Lear purchased the copy for $8.1 million and since then he and his wife have worked to make sure "the people's document" remains accessible to the people.

While I think it is great that Norman Lear is touring this document, I think that "... he and his wife have worked to make sure "the people's document" remains accessible to the people," is summed up nicely by the next paragraph:

Opening events on February 19 are for state lawmakers, public officials and other dignitaries.

Then we will let the rif-raf in to see their document the next day.
