Inside Obama's War Room

How he decided to intervene in Libya – and what it says about his evolution as commander in chief

On the afternoon of monday, March 14th, the French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy stood nervously in the lounge of Le Bourget Airport on the outskirts of Paris, waiting for a private jet carrying a lone Libyan rebel to land. At 62, Lévy is one of France's most famous writers and provocateurs, a regular fixture in the tabloids, where he's known simply as BHL. He rarely goes a month without controversy – whether defending the reputations of accused sex offenders like Roman Polanski and Dominique Strauss-Kahn, or waging one-man foreign-policy campaigns that usually end in failure. In 1993, he tried unsuccessfully to persuade President François Mitterrand to intervene in the Balkans. In 2001, he personally arranged for Afghan leader Ahmed Shah Massoud to meet with President Jacques Chirac, only to have the French Foreign Ministry scuttle the trip for fear of angering the Taliban. Now, as he anxiously paced the airport lounge, he was embarking on what would turn out to be one of the most audacious and improbable feats of amateur diplomacy in modern history.

My Decade of bin Laden, by Michael Hastings

Wearing his trademark outfit – designer suit, no tie, white shirt unbuttoned to reveal a deeply tanned chest – Lévy was waiting for the arrival of Mahmoud Jibril, the leader of the Libyan rebels who had been fighting for three weeks to overthrow Muammar Qaddafi. Lévy had secretly helped arrange for a meeting in Paris later that day between Jibril and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Prodded by Lévy, France had granted formal recognition to the Libyan opposition, known as the National Transitional Council. But no other European country had followed France's lead, and the uprising now appeared in danger of being crushed by Qaddafi, who had just launched an all-out military counteroffensive. Both Lévy and Jibril believed that getting the support of the Americans was the rebels' last hope. "If he doesn't succeed with Clinton," Lévy thought, "all we achieved in France this past week will have been for nothing."

But the meeting with Clinton had already run into a serious snag. Jibril, a 58-year-old political scientist who once taught at the University of Pittsburgh, had been detained at customs. Though he had been received in the Élysée Palace only days before for a meeting Lévy had arranged with President Nicolas Sarkozy, Jibril did not have official clearance to re-enter France. As the hours ticked away, the 5 p.m. time slot for the meeting with Clinton came and went. Lévy scrambled to reschedule. "At six she had a meeting with Sarkozy, at eight was a dinner or something with the G8," he told me recently in St. Paul de Vence, his home in the south of France. "It was very complicated." The consequences of the delay, he feared, could be catastrophic.

America's Last Prisoners of War

After Jibril finally cleared customs, Lévy succeeded in getting Clinton's last free moment of the night before she flew on to Cairo – 10 p.m. in her hotel suite. Lévy and Jibril took a black Mercedes sedan from the Raphael, the luxury hotel in Paris where Lévy lives when in the city, to the Westin, where Clinton was staying.

White House's Power: "doing rinkey-dink do-gooder stuff"

Posted by Ann Corcoran on May 31, 2012

https://refugeeresettlementwatch.wordpress.com/2012/05/31/white-houses-power-doing-rinkey-dink-do-gooder-stuff/

But, would rather be making war!

Have any of you read the New York Times bestseller on President Obama by Edward Klein entitled, The Amateur?   I haven't finished it yet but I almost fell out of bed recently when I read the chapter on White House Iraqi Refugee Czar Samantha Power.   Longtime readers may recall that I noted that Ms. Power (Mrs. Cass Sunstein), Susan Rice at the UN, and Hillary* were largely responsible for our engagement in the Arab Spring excellent-extended-adventure in Libya.  I called them Macbeth's weird sisters in that post.

Klein confirms the role of the three in helping advance the further Islamification of Libya and quotes a White House source who calls the three the "humanitarian Vulcans."

The gist of Power's foreign policy (when to make war) theory is that war is o.k. for America when it is conducted to "protect" people.   She calls it the "Responsibility to Protect" described here by Stanley Kurtz; and the warmongers on the Left even have a shorthand way of referring to her doctrine as R2P.  Of course the situation in Syria and Obama's lack of enthusiasm to protect Syrians comes immediately to mind, but that is a story for another day.

Back to Power, when European countries decided to jump into the Libyan civil war on the side of the rebels apparently Obama was reluctant to get involved, but, according to Klein, Power was itching for a fight and wanted to put her R2P to a test.   Readers here at RRW know how that turned out—tens of thousand of new refugees fled Libya into neighboring countries or tried to cross the Mediterranean resulting in even more people to protect (or is that the plan?).

As you read what Klein says be sure to remember that Power is the so-called Iraqi Refugee Czar in the White House National Security Council and that she was given the job of reforming the refugee program (which we hear nothing about these days).  Too "rinkey-dink" for Mrs. Cass Sunstein?   (Emphasis below is mine).

Klein:

Among Obama's foreign policy advisers, Samantha Power, the far-out leftist firebrand, complained that the administration's cautious, first-dono-harm, approach to the Arab Spring had effectively sidelined her in White House Councils.  She said she'd been relegated to "doing rinky-dink do-gooder stuff," such as advocating on behalf of beleaguered Christians in Iraq, and no longer had as much access to the President.  She was itching to get back in the fray, and she saw an opportunity in Libya.

RAND's 'Unthinkable' war with China

http://atimes.com/2016/08/rands-unthinkable-war-with-china/

By on August 12, 2016 in Asia Times News & Features, China, Japan, Southeast Asia

A new study by the RAND Corporation for US Army presents questionable assumptions while examining a possible long and severe or short US-China war. In a sinister way, it focuses on the military and economic losses and costs and ignores the tragic impact of such a conflict on the people of these two nations and even those beyond. The study assumes the war won't involve other powers, would remain confined to East Asia and no nuclear weapons would be used. It only proves that Pentagon is planning and preparing for a war with China.

RAND recently issued a report on war with China, Thinking the UnthinkableIn my opinion, it didn't do a good enough job, unthinkable-wise.

US ships in China Sea

US Navy ships operate in formation in the South China Sea in this file photo

RAND assumes, as do many US reports, that any clash with the People's Republic of China (PRC) will be not too unthinkable, fought exclusively in Asia, and inevitably end with the US prevailing.

And conventional weapons only.  No nukes!

It cannot be entirely excluded that the Chinese leadership would decide that only the use of nuclear weapons would prevent total defeat and the state's destruction. However, even under such desperate conditions, the resort to nuclear weapons would not be China's only option.

According to RAND the optimal cost-benefit scenario for the PRC: Surrender!

It could instead accept defeat. Indeed, because U.S. nuclear retaliation would make the destruction of the state and collapse of the country all the more certain, accepting defeat would be a better option (depending on the severity of U.S. terms) than nuclear escalation. This logic, along with China's ingrained no-first-use policy, suggests that Chinese first use is most improbable.

Unsurprisingly, all of RAND's scenarios are pretty sunny, for the simple reason that, with nukes out of the picture, conventional war will be fought and won over the Chinese homeland while the closest US civilians will come to the conflict will be Wolf Blitzer and CNN.

And the Chinese would be good with that, at least according to RAND.  Hey, America's destroying our country, but we'll take a beating, capitulate, and accept the national humiliation of submitting to the superior force of the United States.

RAND is welcome to assume that Xi Jinping's response to its steel-trap logic will be to order a crash textile program to supply white flags to China's 1.3 billion citizens and prison uniforms for its 86 million Communist Party members.

Not my take.

Bear in mind that Mao Zedong rolled the dice against the US in regional conflicts during the Korean and Vietnam War period, when the apparent disparity of forces was a lot greater.  That's the precedent and legacy Xi Jinping will be trying to live up to.

But more importantly, bear in mind that the PRC is a rather shaky multi-ethnic regime and it is not interested in a conventional war probably accompanied by Taiwan independence, the secession of Hong Kong, and insurrection, West-aided or not, in Tibet and Xinjiang.

Hour 3 - Laurie Donelson (local activist) talks about her path to health

Hour 3

Laurie Donelson

Local Activist tells her story of healing herself with proper nutrition after a lifetime of being sick and becoming a wellness coach...

My journey from having type 1 diabetes to now still having it but becoming a wellness coach to help others is a long one.

I got diabetes when I was 7 years old...juvenile diabetes or type 1 is the common terminology used.  There are many differences between the two types but the major one is that I no longer produce insulin...type 2's still do and they can even eliminate it while I cannot, at least not thru conventional ways.  I have looked into a couple of others and they were too costly and/or not something I could do the rest of my life, like drinking substances that I would choke on, literally.

As I grew up I ate the average standard American diet (AKA Sad).  I was never taught to eat healthy and I never cared about it.  This is the mental level of most people.  We have those that promote being healthy but most commercials these days are just a lot of intense marketing for mostly fast food companies and eating bad food....food contaminated also with many pesticides and GMO's.

I first became aware of GMO's as I woke up to the "real world" and what's going on in this country.  I had never even heard of GMO's and wondered what they were...once I found out and as I learned more about food and health it led me to finally changing my diet, slowly...I would have never guessed it was as bad as it is...especially with the psychological warfare that has been put upon the masses, around the world...to both not care about health and eat just whatever and then the conglomerate combination of the pharmaceutical industry and big agri...once these two slept together it has become quite an affair!

With the FDA and Monsanto working together they keep us all sick and then make billions off of the sick-diseased public....never "curing" hardly anything...just always asking for more "money for the cure" instead of looking at the core and root of the problem.

However, it is also up to us to care about our health...many of us love that junk and fast processed foods or don't take the time to actually cook because we have busy lives.  I made the change...I had too.  I didn't want to suffer any more from depression, being completely and totally unhealthy and only going to keep going in that direction leading to a lot of horrible disease, pain and early death.

Just thru changing the diet alone brings about better health, adding exercise, maybe such health practices having to do with homeopathy and using essential oils all can elevate a lot of physical and mental issues.

The most miraculous part of all of this is I went thru 20 years of depression and I have totally turned my life around 360 degrees...I want other people to know that there is a way to make that change...they just have to want too and want to put the effort into it.
