Trump Regime Threatens Escalated War on Iraq

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

For the third time this month, rockets struck a US base in Iraq overnight Monday, no reports of casualties so far.

It's unclear who's behind the attacks. Popular Mobilization Units (PMUs) connected to Iraq's military claimed no responsibility.

Were Iraqi's angered by hostile US occupation of the country behind the incidents?

Were they US-staged false flags, wrongfully blamed on Iraqi sources?

Baghdad wants US occupation of the country ended. The Trump regime refuses to leave.

Since last October, two dozen rocket attacks targeted US bases and its Baghdad embassy.

Wherever US forces show up in large numbers, mass slaughter, vast destruction and human misery follow — why the US is increasingly reviled as a pariah state worldwide.

In late February, Trump regime State Department officials David Schenker and Nathan Sales discussed the situation in Iraq.

Pompeo falsely designated PMU group Kata'ib Hezbollah (connected to Iraq's military) a terrorist organization, its head Ahmad al-Hamidawi a terrorist.

Sales lied claiming the group "is responsible for numerous terrorist attacks against US and" allied forces — presenting no corroborating evidence because none exists.

He lied saying the group "remains actively engaged in plotting terrorism against US forces, our partners, and innocent Iraqi civilians…at the behest of Iran (sic)."

Again no proof offered. There is none.

Claiming the US acts defensively in Iraq and elsewhere regionally defies reality — a nation permanently at war on humanity at home and abroad.

Schenker falsely claimed Kata'ib Hezbollah members operate as Iranian "foot soldiers…export(ing)  terrorism, corruption, and bribery to Iraq" — a bald-faced Big Lie.

On Monday, Pompeo ignored illegal US occupation of Iraq and increasing aggression on the nation and its long-suffering people, saying:

The Trump regime will act in "self-defense," what's impossible for an aggressor to do, adding:

Baghdad "must defend" US forces, falsely claiming they're "supporting the Iraqi government's efforts to defeat ISIS" — the jihadist group created, armed, funded, trained, and directed by the Pentagon and CIA throughout the region and elsewhere.

Those "responsible for the attacks must be held accountable," Pompeo roared.

The Trump regime "will not tolerate attacks and threats to American lives" and will take "action as necessary" to escalate aggression on the nation and its people on the phony pretext of self-defense.

As long as US and allied forces remain in Iraq unwanted, illegally occupying the country, a state of permanent war will exist.

The US presence is all about wanting control over Iraqi oil, along with using bases in the country as platforms for regional aggression.

On Tuesday, Iraq's Foreign Ministry sent formal complaints about US terror-bombing attacks on the country to the UN and Security Council.

Secretary general Guterres is a US imperial ally, a likely CIA asset.

US, UK, French veto power prevents Security Council resolutions that denounce US-led NATO crimes of war, against humanity, and illegal occupation of nations where its forces are not wanted.

Iraq's only alternative is resistance against imperial Washington's presence in the country until its troops are gone so the Iraqi sovereignty is restored, its territorial integrity protected.
