Russia/US World's Apart Views on Syria

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Russia is militarily, diplomatically, and legally involved in Syria at the request of its government — its mission all about combatting ISIS and other jihadists, wanting them prevented from threatening its territory.

The US under Obama and  Trump is at war on Syria without declaring it, using ISIS and other jihadists as imperial foot soldiers — its mission all about regime change, wanting pro-Western puppet rule replacing its legitimate government.

On Thursday, Security Council members met in special session to discuss Syria.

US envoy Kelly Craft recited a litany of bald-faced Big Lies, what happens time and again during these sessions.

She lied calling Russia's involvement in Syria's liberating struggle "barbaric and unjustified."

She lied accusing Syrian and Russian forces of "lethal violence against thousands of innocent children, women, and men" — how the US and its rogue allies operate in all their wars of aggression, not how Syria and Russia operate.

The US systematically and maliciously breached all Security Council resolutions relating to ending its aggression and restoring peace and stability to the country — notably by having jihadists it controls breach all ceasefires agreed on, falsely blaming Russia and Syria for their war crimes.

The US, its imperial allies, and jihadist proxies are the enemies of Syrian sovereignty and its people — Russia their allies.

Addressing SC members on Tuesday, its envoy Vassily Nebenzia set the record straight.

Special sessions on Syria are always convened "at the moment when terrorists in Syria are under threat, and the Syrian government reinstalls control over its national territory," Nebenzia stressed, adding:

Since the end of last year, US supported terrorists attacked government forces and Syrian civilians "over 1,400" times with "tanks, machine guns, mortar and artillery bombardments."

Russia has detailed information on war crimes committed by the US, its allies, and jihadist proxies.

In the first two weeks of January alone, US supported jihadists conducted over "1,000 attacks," killing and wounding Syrian soldiers and civilians.

The US and its allies call these cutthroat killers the "moderate opposition," ignoring their atrocities throughout the war.

They use schools, hospitals, and other civilian facilities as "combat positions." They hold terrorized civilians as human shields.

Since the Obama regime launched aggression in 2011, hundreds of thousands of Syrians were killed or wounded, millions displaced internally or abroad — on the phony pretext of combatting terrorism the US supports.

Nebenzia used the US-led rape and destruction of Raqqa as an example of its war crimes in Syria.

Before terror-bombing began, the city's population was 229,000, After its destruction, there were 3,000.

Tens of thousands were slaughtered in cold blood, others displaced. Large numbers returned to their home areas hoping to rebuild their homes and lives.

Similar disturbing facts relate to US aggression in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, and elsewhere.

Nebenzia called phony US-led criticism of Russia in Syria "farci(cal)."

Russia is helping to liberate Syria. The US wants it controlled as a client state, its resources looted, its people exploited, an Israeli rival eliminated.

Russia scrupulously observes international law. The US flouts it unaccountably — at home and abroad.
