Emergency Security Council Meeting on Syria

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Thursday's session was the latest one, numerous others preceding it throughout years of US-led aggression on Syrian sovereign independence.

SC members more often disagree than agree on issues relating to the country. Russia prioritizes combating and eliminating terrorists involved in the conflict as US imperial proxies.

Washington pursues endless war for regime change regardless of the human cost, pretending humanitarian concerns it doesn't give a damn about.

During Thursday's session, Russia rejected an unacceptable US-supported statement, calling for ending hostilities in southwestern Syria where government forces are battling to liberate the area - much of it still held by US-supported ISIS and al-Nusra terrorists.

Washington and its imperial allies want Damascus prevented from regaining control over its own southwestern territory bordering Jordan, Iraq, and illegally Israeli occupied Golan.

Moscow supports Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity. Its intervention in the conflict was all about combatting the scourge of terrorism Washington, NATO, Israel and their rogue allies support.

Key for Russia is preventing this scourge from threatening its heartland, a likely US/NATO objective. Putin has no obligation to defend the security of Syria or any other nations, only his own.

Following Thursday's Security Council session, Russia's UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya said Washington and its allies "focus(ed) on the cessation of the hostilities, and we are focusing on fighting terrorism."

No press statement was issued by Moscow or the US delegation.

Through his spokesman, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres deplorably showed continued support for Washington's imperial campaign, appealing for "an immediate suspension of the hostilities and the resumption of negotiations" - instead of supporting Syria's sovereignty and denouncing so-called "rebels" as US supported terrorists.

Separately, AMN News reported that Russia's Khmeimim airbase in Syria was attacked by armed drones, its air defense systems destroying them before they could strike targets.

Terrorists operating attack drones get them from Washington and other anti-Syrian countries. The latest attack on Russia's airbase indicates Trump's continued regime change campaign.

A SouthFront report possibly suggested otherwise, saying "Russian advisors visiting the Syrian capital Damascus are confident that the US forces will pull out of al-Tanf (in Southwestern Syria) and will also aim to completely withdraw from (its northern occupation) in the next six months."

Washington unjustifiably justifies its presence in Syria as wanting the scourge of ISIS eliminated.

Its fighters remain a formidable force because of US/Israeli and allied support, supplying its forces with heavy weapons.

With hawkish neocon extremists John Bolton and Mike Pompeo in charge of Trump's geopolitical agenda, ending US aggression in Syria, including support for terrorist fighters, seems highly unlikely - whatever publicly comes out of Putin/Trump summit talks on July 16.

Washington remains involved in all post-9/11 wars of aggression it launched. Each theater remains active.

No evidence suggests a new US course in Syria or anywhere else. Endless wars continue without resolution.
