Despite accuracy risks and privacy concerns, a growing number of American police departments are using various technologies to investigate crimes. This includes facial recognition software (see 1, 2, 3), license plate readers, "Smart" streetlights, ShotSpotter and other surveillance tech (see 1, 2). Amazon Ring Doorbells are increasing in popularity too.

Neighbors App Usage Grows Among Police, Fire Departments
The app, developed by Amazon subsidiary Ring, allows departments to view and share information with users. More than 2,700 departments are using the service around the country as of mid-June 2022.
