Pompeo Vows No End to War in Yemen

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Despite admitting that humanitarian crisis conditions reached "epic proportions" in Yemen, Mike Pompeo vowed no change in US involvement with Saudi Arabia against its people, saying:

"The program that we're involved in today we intend to continue" - without explaining that US aggression in Yemen is in its 18th year. The Saudis, UAE, UK, France, Israel and other countries are partners in endless US war.

The Trump regime blocked Security Council efforts aimed at resolving the conflict - neocon geopolitical prostitute Nikki Haley saying "we can't support a resolution at the moment" - failing to explain the US wants endless war in Yemen continued, no matter the genocidal human toll.

Pompeo and war secretary Mattis calling for a ceasefire "in the next 30 days" weeks earlier was head-fake deception.

On October 30, a phony Pompeo statement on Yemen "call(ed) on all parties to support UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Yemen based on the agreed references," adding:

"The time is now for the cessation of hostilities, including missile and UAV strikes from Houthi-controlled areas into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Subsequently, Coalition air strikes must cease in all populated areas in Yemen."

"It is time to end this conflict, replace conflict with compromise, and allow the Yemeni people to heal through peace and reconstruction."

He lied. So did war secretary Mattis at the same time, saying "(w)e have go to move toward a peace effort (in Yemen), and we can't say we are going to do it some time in the future. We need to be doing this in the next 30 days."

"We want to see everybody around a peace table based on a ceasefire, based on a pullback from the border and then based on ceasing dropping of bombs."

"This has got to end. We have to replace combat with compromise. It's time to stop this."

Republicans and undemocratic Dems are allied in waging endless wars of aggression with no prospect for resolution in multiple theaters.

Continuing, not ending them, reflects what US imperial policy is all about. If Washington wanted peace and stability, war in Yemen and other theaters would be wound down and resolved.

They rage endlessly, victims blamed for US high crimes committed against them.
