US Jerusalem Embassy Opening Less Gala Than Promoted

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Israel's Foreign Ministry said 86 nations with diplomatic missions in the country got invitations to come, claiming envoys from 33 countries attended the May 14 US embassy opening. Only 22 of them showed up.

Countries attending included Albania, Angola, Austria, Cameroon, the Czech Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Georgia, Guatemala Honduras, Hungary, Kenya, Macedonia, Panama, the Philippines, Republic of the Congo, Romania, South Sudan, Tanzania, Ukraine and Zambia - America, of course, showing up, along with host country Israel.

Here are nations declining invitations to come:

Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Britain, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Eritrea, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liberia, Lithuania, Mexico, Moldova, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Sweden, Thailand and Vietnam.

Jerusalem is an international city under a UN trusteeship. Israel's claim to the city as its exclusive capital breaches international law - operating extrajudicially like Washington.

Two rogue states partner in each other's high crimes, contemptuous of democratic values and rule of law principles.

Jerusalem is Palestine's historic capital - belligerently occupied by Israel.

Few nations recognize the city as its capital. The vast majority do not - all the more reason not to in the wake of mass Israeli slaughter of Gazans on Monday, following decades of carnage preceding it, along with ongoing brutalizing of an entire indigenous population.

Last December, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) "declare(d) East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine and invite(d) all countries to recognize the State of Palestine and East Jerusalem as its occupied capital."

It called Trump's December 6, 2017 declaration "null and void legally, an attack on the historical, legal, natural and national rights of the Palestinian people, a deliberate undermining of all peace efforts, an impetus to extremism and terrorism, and a threat to international peace and security."

It's time the world community said the same thing, renouncing Israel's claim to the city, recognizing East Jerusalem as Palestine's exclusive capital.
